EORI Number – what is it and why does your company need It?

The EORI number is a key element in international trade. Without it, you cannot legally complete customs clearance within the European Union. Why is it so important? How can you verify the EORI number of a business partner? Can you obtain it on your own? This article answers these questions!

What is the EORI number?

EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) is a unique identification number assigned to businesses and individuals performing customs clearance within the European Union. This system was introduced to streamline and standardize customs procedures. Every entity involved in importing or exporting goods must have an EORI number.

For Polish entrepreneurs, the EORI number consists of the „PL” prefix, the NIP number, and five zeros at the end. If an EORI number is assigned to a non-EU company but registered in Poland, it includes the „PL” prefix, 14 digits, and the letter „Z” at the end.

Who needs an EORI number?

The EORI number is mandatory for all entrepreneurs engaged in transactions outside of the country. This includes importers, exporters, freight forwarders, and customs agencies. Without an EORI number, goods cannot be declared for customs clearance, which may lead to delays and additional costs.

It is important to note that the EORI number is unique across the European Union – each company can only have one such number.

How to verify an EORI number?

If you work with a foreign business partner or want to ensure that a company has an active EORI number, you can easily verify it. The European Commission provides an online search tool where you can check the status of an EORI number using the entity’s identifier. This way, you can quickly confirm whether your business partner is registered and authorized to perform customs clearance.

If you don’t know the EORI number of a particular company, you can recreate it from the NIP number. For Polish businesses, simply add the „PL” prefix before the NIP number and complete it with five zeros at the end. For example, a company with the NIP number 5272883861 would have the following EORI number: PL527288386100000.

EORI and trade with the UK – what has changed?

After Brexit, the United Kingdom is no longer part of the EU customs system, meaning there are additional requirements for companies exporting goods to the UK. In addition to having an EORI number issued in the EU, businesses performing customs clearance in the UK must also have a UK EORI number, which starts with the „GB” prefix.

Furthermore, from January 31, 2025, the UK will require an ENS (Entry Summary Declaration) for all goods imported into its territory. The ENS declaration must be submitted before the goods are loaded and contains detailed information about the shipment. Failure to meet this requirement could result in delays at the border or, in extreme cases, refusal of entry into the UK.

Why was the EORI system created?

The EORI system was created to streamline customs procedures and enhance oversight of goods flow between the EU countries and third-party countries. The introduction of this system standardized the identification of economic entities, significantly simplifying customs clearance and communication between businesses and customs authorities.

EORI is also part of the broader e-Customs project, which aims for full digitalization of customs procedures across the European Union.

How to obtain an EORI number?

Although the process of obtaining an EORI number is not complicated, it requires knowledge of the regulations and the correct completion of the application. In Poland, registration is handled by the National Tax Administration through the Electronic Customs and Tax Services Platform (PUESC).

To avoid errors and speed up the process, it’s worth seeking the assistance of an experienced customs agency. Experts not only help with registration but also provide guidance on customs procedures.

Why use the help of a customs agency?

Obtaining an EORI number is just the beginning of the formalities related to international trade. A customs agency, such as PKS International CARGO S.A., not only assists with obtaining the EORI number but also handles the comprehensive customs clearance of your goods. This way, you can avoid unnecessary delays and problems with customs clearance.

Summary

The EORI number is an essential tool in international trade. It is required for customs clearance, and failure to register can lead to serious complications. If your company plans to import or export goods, it’s wise to take care of the formalities in advance. Using the services of a professional customs agency allows you to focus on growing your business instead of worrying about customs procedures.
